This training is applicable to anyone who wants to learn the Art of Advocacy and how to be more effective in promoting your cause through the legislative process.

Speaker Bio
Alex Santiago served in the Hawaii State Legislature from 1990 till 2000. He chaired the Committee on Health and the Committee on Ocean and Marine Resources. Upon his retirement from public office, he served for two years as the Chair of the Democratic Party of Hawai’i.
Alex is a Licensed Social Worker and has practiced in the field for more than 30 years. He started his social work career as the Youth Coordinator with the Waianae Rap Center and worked for four years as a CPS social worker.
Prior to embarking on his political career, Alex worked as the Director of Social Work at Kahuku Hospital. He also lectured on Social Policy and Macro Social Work at the graduate level at the University of Hawai’i, School of Social Work.
Alex is currently the Executive Director of the Hawai’i Psychological Association. He also serves as a consultant to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy-Hawai’i Division and the Hawai’i Dental Hygienists’ Association. In the past he has served as a consultant to The Hawai’i Nurses Association, Easter Seals of Hawai’i, The Mental Health Association of Hawai’i, Partners in Development, and others.
Alex was instrumental in starting up the organization PHOCUSED (Protecting Hawai’i’s Ohana, Children, Under Served, Elderly and Disabled) and served for five years as the Executive Director.
